PITTSBURGH—Four swimmers from the University of Pittsburgh are bound for the 2021 Toyota U.S. Open, which kicks off Wednesday, Dec. 1 and continues through Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The four-day meet is a long course competition, with the preliminary heats Thursday-Saturday scheduled for 10 a.m. each morning, followed by finals at 7 p.m. Pitt will not partake in the 800 Freestyle event on Wednesday evening.
Pitt will send a strong contingent to compete in the breaststroke events which includes juniors Jerry Chen and Tatum Detwiler. Chen has secured two NCAA B Cuts in the 100 and 200 Breast so far this season (53.43 / 1:58.32), while Detwiler is coming off a record-breaking performance at the Ohio State Invitational, swimming a breaststroke split of 27.58 to help earn a new program time (1:39.13) in the 200 Medley Relay. Detwiler will compete in the 100 Breaststroke and for the men, Chen will swim in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke.
Sophomore Sophie Yendell has qualified to swim in the 50 Freestyle, while junior Daisy Anderson is slated to compete in three events – the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys and the 200 Backstroke. Anderson is one of two women for the Panthers to have secured a NCAA cut, earning a B Cut in the 400 IM with a time of 4:16.52.
"Looking forward to seeing this group race long course," head coach John Hargis said. "Daisy and Sophie need to get a few cuts for their British Championship in April, so we are taking them down there to secure their spots in that meet. Jerry and Tatum just want to race some long course to help them get ready for American Nationals in April as well, so it's just a great opportunity all around to race in a different environment and pool."
