PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling program didn't have to look far for its next group of talented incoming student-athletes, with head coach Keith Gavin signing five western Pennsylvania products from the Class of 2022 to National Letters of Intent (NLI) this week.
Pitt's 2022 recruiting class includes two Pennsylvania state champions and four PIAA place winners, with each of the five signees hailing from nearby the Pittsburgh area.
Here is a breakdown of Pitt's signed and sealed commits from the Class of 2022:
Mac Stout | Pittsburgh, Pa. | Mt. Lebanon H.S.
The brother of former Pitt wrestler Kellan Stout, Mac signed with Pitt as a consensus top-50 recruit out of nearby Mt. Lebanon High School. Stout was the 2020 PIAA state runner-up in Class AAA at 170 pounds and projects as a likely 197-pounder for the Panthers.
With 91 career victories in three seasons at Mt. Lebanon, Stout enters his senior season in 2022 as one of the standout wrestlers in the WPIAL and will join Pitt in 2022-23 as one of the most heralded recruits signed by the program in recent years.
Dayton Pitzer | Mt. Pleasant, Pa. | Mt. Pleasant H.S.
With an 85-3 prep record and two PIAA Class AA state titles to his impressive prep resume, Pitzer has been a dominant force in Pennsylvania throughout his high school career at Mt. Pleasant.
The 2019 state champion at 182 pounds and 2021 PIAA gold medalist at 215 pounds, Pitzer missed his sophomore season due to injury but has amassed 62 pins while healthy and enters his senior year as one of the state's must-watch wrestlers on the prep scene.
Briar Priest | Greensburg, Pa. | Hempfield Area H.S.
Priest is another PIAA state champion who signed his NLI with Pitt this week. The Hempfield Area product won the 2021 Class AAA title at 132 pounds, winning 17 matches by pin as a junior.
Another WPIAL standout, Priest has 98 career wins during his prep career and displayed tremendous improvement during his time with the Spartans.
Jared Keslar | Connellsville, Pa. | Connellsville H.S.
A two-time state placewinner, Kesler commits to the Panthers from Connellsville. He has finished fourth in Class AAA at the PIAA Championships the last two years while moving up from 145 to 152 pounds.
Keslar is rated as one of the top-15 recruits in the state of Pennsylvania this year by numerous outlets.
Jack Pletcher | Latrobe, Pa. | Greater Latrobe H.S.
Pitt will have another Pletcher in its wrestling room beginning next season. Jack, the brother of Ohio State's NCAA All-American and current Pitt volunteer assistant Luke Pletcher, signed this week to remain close to home and compete for the Panthers during his college career.
A freestyle state champion, Pletcher has tallied 76 career victories during his career for Greater Latrobe, including a 23-6 campaign as a junior and a third-place finish in Westmoreland County at 152 pounds.
