Volleyball, Men’s Soccer Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Kayla Lund of volleyball and Rodrigo Almeida of men's soccer were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Lund led the fourth-ranked volleyball team to two home sweeps over the weekend against Wake Forest (Oct. 29) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 31). The graduate outside hitter had team-best averages of 4.00 points, 3.50 kills, 2.83 digs and 0.50 service aces over six sets played. She recorded double-digits in the kill column in both matches, with 11 against the Demon Deacons and 10 against the Hokies, while hitting at a clip of .333 for the weekend.
Almeida, a senior midfielder, helped nationally-ranked Pitt to two victories this past week, with one goal and three assists over UMass and No. 21 Virginia Tech at home. Almeida tallied three assists in Pitt's 5-1 victory over UMass, becoming the second Panther this season – and fourth in the last two seasons – to record three assists in single-game. That mark is tied for second in a single contest in program history. The Salvador, Brazil, native scored the Panthers' second goal in a 4-1 victory over the Hokies. He leads the team in goals scored (7) and points (20) heading into postseason play.
