MIAMI, FL – The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving team had a solid first day at the FIU TYR Fall Classic Friday night at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. Of the 16 swimming events, the team notched 14 podium finishes, seven in the A heats and seven in the B heats. The Panthers finished the night in third place overall out of eight schools.
Within the A Heats, Cooper Van der Laan secured the sole first-place finish of the night with a time of 54.34 in the 100 Breast. Serhii Ahadzhanian and Flynn Crisci tallied more points for the Panthers placing second in the 100 Fly (48.71) and the 50 Free (20.86) respectively. Earning the third place slot was the women's 400 medley relay (3:48.09), Tatum Detwiler in the 100 Breast (1:03.68) and Daisy Anderson, who notched a new personal best in the 100 Back (56.93).
"We started a little slow and had some nerves at the start, but the second part of the meet was much better," said head coach John Hargis. "We just need to find a way to be the best us we can be and then we'll be just fine. There were a lot of good segments within the meet tonight, but we were racing for the first time and it showed. Tomorrow should be a much better day for us. We just need to come in and control ourselves a little bit, enjoy the races, and have a good day."
Freshman Cameron Cash showed yet another strong diving performance in the 1M event, ending the night with 304.60 points and second place for the men's flight A. He earned his second NCAA qualifying cut this evening, along with teammate Dylan Reed who secured his first (310.20). Amy Read also earned her second NCAA qualifying cut of the season with a final 3M score of 284.90.
"I think it was a solid performance against some great competition," head diving coach Katie Kasprzak said. "We saw some good elements with some areas of improvement for the remainder of the season. We are confident going into tomorrow and hope to see some higher scores."
