Director of Athletics Leads Multiple National Organizations
PITTSBURGH – In her fifth year at the helm of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics, Director of Athletics Heather Lyke has proven her worth as a leader.
Entering the 2021-22 academic year, Lyke garnered recognition for her leadership as she was named a 2021 Women of Influence Award winner by the PGH Business Journal.
In addition to her role at Pitt, Lyke also heads multiple national organizations for collegiate athletics. In October she was named President-Elect of Women Leaders in College Sports, where she will serve a three-year term. Additionally, Lyke heads the LEAD1 Association Executive Committee, formerly the Division 1A Athletic Directors Association, which is the membership association that represents the 130 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors and their departments.
One of five women to lead in the Power Five, Lyke has dramatically reenergized a Pitt Department of Athletics that encompasses 19 intercollegiate sports programs with nearly 470 student-athletes who compete in the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference. Since her arrival in March 2017, she has recruited eight new head coaches and directed a dynamic rebrand of the University's athletic marks and logos. She unveiled Pitt Studios, the department's state-of-the-art broadcast production facilities that helped launch the ACC Network in August 2019. In January 2020, the department announced the launching of Victory Heights which is a transformative vision to significantly enhance the athletic facilities where 16 of Pitt's 19 teams live, learn and train.
Lyke also serves as the Atlantic Coast Conference representative on the NCAA Division I Council, a position she will hold through the 2022-23 academic year. The Division I Council is a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I. Athletics directors, athletics administrators, Senior Woman Administrators, faculty athletics representatives and student-athletes serve on the Council. Every Division I conference is represented on the Council, which replaces the Leadership and Legislative Councils in the previous structure.
