Women’s Soccer, Football Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Amanda West of women's soccer and Rashad Weaver of football were named the Office Depot/Supra Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
West, a sophomore, had two goals and an assist in two Pitt wins last week. In a 2-0 victory over Syracuse, she assisted on the game-winning goal with a shot that hit the left post that was followed up by teammate Emily Yaple for a goal and later added an insurance goal on a penalty kick. She converted another penalty kick for the golden goal in the 96th minute for a 1-0 win at Navy. West has recorded a goal in all four games this season, as the Panthers are undefeated and tied for the best start in program history (2006 and 2009).
After missing all of 2019 due to injury, Weaver made his 2020 debut against Syracuse and absolutely sparkled in the 21-10 win. Playing in his first game since the Dec. 31, 2018 Sun Bowl—a span of 628 days—Weaver collected career highs in sacks (two) and TFLs (three), while totaling seven stops overall. Weaver's final sack proved to be pivotal in the final result. With the Panthers protecting a four-point lead and Syracuse threatening at the Pitt 44, Weaver sacked Tommy DeVito for a seven-yard loss on 4th-and-3, shifting momentum back to Pitt. Weaver has already been honored for his Syracuse performance, earning Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
