PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh swimming & diving programs each received prestigious recognition this week when the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) named the Pitt men's and women's programs to its 2020 Scholar All-America Team.
Teams were selected based on recent grade-point averages, which resulted in both Pitt programs earning national acknowledgment for success in the classroom during this past year.
The Pitt swimming & diving teams, which led all athletic programs at the University of Pittsburgh with 49 total ACC Academic Honor Roll selections this year, have made impressive and consistent progress academically under head coach John Hargis, who is entering his fifth season with the Panthers.
Six graduating Panthers – Hannah Bumgarner, Lisa Coe, Valerie Daigneault, Sarah Giamber, Jacqueline Hendrix and Madelyn Shaffer – each became four-time ACC Honor Roll awardees recently.
And the immediate academic success of the freshmen class also helped Pitt improve from 35 swimming & diving ACC Honor Roll selections in 2019 to 49 ACC Honor Roll recipients from the program in 2020.
That significant leap in the number of Pitt swimming & diving student-athletes surpassing the 3.0 GPA threshold has now boosted the Panthers into the pantheon of programs that were recognized by the CSCAA as a Scholar All-America Team for 2020.
The CSCAA will announce individual Scholar All-Americans next week.
