PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh senior defensive end Patrick Jones II was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list on Thursday afternoon, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation announced.
Jones was one of 42 student-athletes, and among just nine players from the Atlantic Coast Conference, to be selected as a 2020 contender for the 17th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is presented each season to the college football defensive player who best combines performance and character.
An administration of justice major, Jones (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) enters his senior season with a burgeoning reputation as one of the nation's premier pass rushers off the edge.
Last year, in his first season as a starter, Jones helped Pitt's defense lead the nation in sacks (51 total, 3.92/game). He accumulated 43 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and registered 18 official quarterback hurries in 2019 – although Pro Football Focus tabbed him with several more pressures.
As a result of his impressive junior season, Jones earned second team All-ACC honors and received honorable mention All-America recognition from Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus.
In large part because of Jones' consistent threat, Pitt's 2019 defense ranked in the nation's top 35 in no fewer than eight categories, including tackles for loss (ninth, 7.9/game), rushing defense (12th, 108.5 yards/game) and total defense (15th, 312.9 yards/game).
With seven defensive starters coming back, as well as the expected return from injury of experienced defensive linemen Rashad Weaver and Keyshon Camp, the Panthers have the potential to own one of the top defensive units in all of college football in 2020.
