Former New York Riptide Head Coach/General Manager Joins Staff
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head lacrosse coach Emily Boissonneault announced the hiring of Regy Thorpe as an assistant coach with the program Tuesday afternoon.
Thorpe comes to Pittsburgh after spending the last year as the New York Riptide head coach and general manager in the National Lacrosse League. Prior to that, Thorpe spent 10 seasons as the associate head coach of his alma mater Syracuse with the women's lacrosse team. His success and experiences will be a major asset in building Pitt's inaugural team.
"I am excited for this opportunity and can't wait to get started," Thorpe said. "The moment I first spoke with Coach Emily, I knew Pitt was the place I wanted to be. The athletic department's passion for and commitment to women's lacrosse was evident in speaking with them. I would like to thank Coach Emily, Heather Lyke, and Dustin Gray for their confidence in me. My family and I are excited and energized to be joining the Pitt family."
In addition to his extensive coaching path, Thorpe also enjoyed a successful playing career. He got his start at Herkimer County Community College where he was a JUCO Defensive Player of the Year and All-American in 1991. He then finished his collegiate career at Syracuse where helped the Orange to a runner-up finish in 1992 and NCAA title in 1993. Thorpe also garnered All-America honors while at Syracuse. He was a member of the U.S. National Indoor Lacrosse Team, and played professionally for the Rochester Rattlers (2001-2006) and Rochester Knighthawks. The Rattlers reached the Major League Lacrosse Final Four in 2001, 2004 and 2005, while the Knighthawks (1995-2010) made 13 consecutive playoff appearances and were crowned World Champions in 1997 and 2007.
"I am beyond excited to announce Regy as the newest addition to our staff," Boissonneault said. "His experience coaching at Syracuse for years, along with his continued involvement with the men's sport, especially box lacrosse, will be a huge asset as we build our program. I know that he will bring a creative and tactical system to our offense that we will need to compete in the ACC."
While with the Orange, Thorpe coached and mentored 21 IWLCA All-Americans, six IWLCA Players of the Year and six Tewaaraton Trophy Finalists. He saw Syracuse make 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including six Final Fours and two championship finals.
"Regy has created incredible relationships throughout his career both with his players and in the lacrosse community," Boissonneault added. "We are looking forward to seeing those connections in action during the recruiting process and as we continue to develop stronger relationships between clubs and our program."
During his time with Syracuse and the Riptide, Thorpe served as the head coach of the U.S. Lacrosse Indoor Box Lacrosse World Team. He also serves as the Chief Lacrosse Officer for 3DLacrosse. Thorpe spent a year as the head coach of the Long Island Sound of the United Women's Lacrosse League and led them to an undefeated season and championship in 2017.
Thorpe is an inductee of numerous Hall of Fames including: Jordan Elbridge Hall of Fame, U.S. Lacrosse Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame, NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and Rochester Knighthawks National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame.
"As we begin to develop the leadership, relationships and skill of our young team, I know that Regy is the right person to help us create the legacy that will be Pitt Lacrosse," said Boissonneault said.
Thorpe joins Boissonneault as they build Pitt's first women's lacrosse program, with the inaugural competition season set for 2021-22. Pitt's current roster features 11 players.
