PITTSBURGH – In collaboration with The University of Pittsburgh, Pitt Athletics announced a Voting Matters campaign geared toward voter registration, voter education and voter participation for all student-athletes, coaches and staff.
"We all have the ability to make an impact in this country by exercising our right to vote," said men's basketball head coach Jeff Capel. "Voter registration and educating yourself on the voting process is an integral part of making sure your voice is heard. I look forward to experiencing this with my team and watching young leaders continue to emerge at Pitt."
Pitt administrators, head coaches and student-athletes are developing plans to provide voter registration and education sessions for all 19 programs. All sessions are to be completed by mid-September in advance of voter registration deadlines for the 2020 general election Nov. 3. A state-by-state list of voter registration deadlines as well as other important voting details are available HERE.
"The opportunity to participate in free and fair elections is a key principal of our American democracy and should not be taken lightly," said Jordan Fields, four-year member of the Pitt Track and Field program and the University's 2020 Omicron Delta Kappa Senior of the Year. "Historically, several minority groups in America have been denied this right, African Americans in particular, who faced poll taxes, literacy tests, physical threats and violence to intimidate them, and discourage their participation in our nation's electoral process. Now more than ever, it is imperative that young people exercise their right to vote, as it is the easiest way to affect change nationally and locally. There is power in your voice and your vote - use it!"
Pitt Athletics will also participate in and support student voter registration initiatives from the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Community and Governmental Relations. In addition, the athletic department is working to adjust schedules on Nov. 3 to provide student-athletes, staff and coaches every opportunity to take an active role in the voting process.
