Four Panthers Named NWCA All-Americans

MANHEIM, Pa., -- Four members of the University of Pittsburgh wrestling team were named All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Friday afternoon.
Named to the First Team was redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi (133) and senior Demetrius Thomas (285). Earning Second Team honors is redshirt junior Jake Wentzel (165) and redshirt sophomore Nino Bonaccorsi (184).
All-American honors were based on each wrestler's overall body of work through the conference tournaments and up to the national championships.
Phillippi successfully defending his ACC title this season at 133 pounds, finishing the year 25-1. The Derry, Pa., native earned his spot on the All-ACC Team and would have been the No. 4 seed at the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Thomas capped off his season senior at Pitt by also defending his ACC title at heavyweight. An All-ACC Team honoree, Thomas finished the year 21-3 and would have been the seven seed at the NCAA Championships. Thomas finished his career as a two-time ACC Champion, two-time NCAA qualifier and with a 48-8 record through his two seasons at Pitt.
Wentzel became a first-time NCAA qualifier after winning his first ACC title at 165 pounds this season. Wentzel had a successful redshirt junior season after returning from a season-ending injury a year ago, finishing with an 18-7 record and would have been the 11 seed at the NCAA Championship.
Bonaccorsi, a two-time NCAA qualifier, placed third at the ACC Championships and earned an automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships. The redshirt sophomore had a notable season, finishing the year 23-5 and would have been the 10 seed at the NCAA Championships.
