Diving, Wrestling Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Amy Read of women's diving and Nino Bonaccorsi of wrestling were named the Office Depot Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Read, a sophomore, made history Saturday at the 2020 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships to finish a great week for her at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Saturday's action concluded with Read becoming the first Pitt women's diver to reach the ACC platform championship final, in which she would finish sixth. The Leeds, England, native was one of three Pitt women's divers to score team points on platform, with senior Krista Jones just missing out on the final as well after diving impressively to finish ninth. Read also scored for the Panthers in both of the ACC's 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions last week in Greensboro, adding an impressive 46 team points to Pitt's total tally at the women's conference meet.
Bonaccorsi, a redshirt sophomore, recorded the most notable win of his career Saturday as he upset No. 2 Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech. He scored first in the opening period, but trailed 3-2 at the end of the first. He then fell behind 6-2 at the end of the second. Bonaccorsi then scored an escape and two takedowns to force overtime. Bonaccorsi sealed the deal in TB-1 after Bolen escaped and Bonaccorsi scored a takedown. The win was Bonaccorsi's 20th of the season and 41st in his career, and was his first win over a ranked opponent this season. The team win was the second over the seventh-ranked team this season as the Panthers defeated then-ranked No. 7 Lehigh Nov. 24, 19-18, on criteria.
Up next for Pitt women's diving is the NCAA Zone A Diving Meet March 9-11 in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Panthers will host the 2020 ACC Wrestling Championship Sunday, March 8, at Petersen Events Center. Tickets are available for purchase at PittsburghPanthers.com or by calling 1-800-643-PITT (7488).
