GREENSBORO, N.C.—The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving program scored eight times thanks to seven individual efforts and a relay swim on Friday at the 2020 ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Seniors Madelyn Shaffer, Valerie Daigneault and Sarah Giamber paced the Panthers on Friday.
Shaffer advanced to the consolation final of the 200-yard freestyle before placing 15th in 1:47.98, Daigneault took 16th in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.44 and Giamber dramatically won the C Final of the 400-yard individual medley to finish 17th in 4:15.61.
A trio of underclassmen also scored for Pitt women's swimming on Friday in Greensboro.
Sophomore Madison Nalls took 19th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.81, freshman Daisy Anderson placed 20th in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:17.80 and fellow freshman Kate Fuhrmann scored in the 100-yard breaststroke by finishing 23rd in 1:02.72.
"Maddie Shaffer is swimming phenomenally well and leading us in her final conference meet," Pitt head coach John Hargis said after Friday's action. "It's been fun throughout this meet seeing the seniors perform at such a high level. It's also exciting that we have several underclassmen earning night swims, because they're also witnessing firsthand what the culmination of four years of hard work can become by watching these seniors. The future is certainly bright. As a team, we've battled every day of this meet, and now we need to finish with two more strong sessions tomorrow."
Sophomore diver Wesley Ahart led the Panthers in the men's platform action, scoring at ACCs for the first time in his career by finishing 24th with a total score of 213.75.
"The men competed hard today," Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton said. "It was positive that Wesley was able to score for the first time at an ACC meet. Looking ahead, we're really excited to see what our trio of women can do on platform tomorrow. We have the potential to perform really well on Saturday."
Friday's swimming action concluded with Pitt's 400-yard medley relay of Valerie Daigneault, Kate Fuhrmann, Madelyn Shaffer and Madison Nalls taking 10th in 3:39.92 to add 34 points.
Also diving on platform for the Panthers, men's athletes Josh Parquet (28th, 206.55) and Dylan Reed (30th, 203.85) just missed out on scoring positions in their final event of the meet. Reed finished his first ACC Championships by tallying 23 points on springboard for the Panthers – tied with Tony Galante in 2014 for the most points scored by a freshman Pitt men's diver at the ACC meet.

The 100-yard butterfly saw Kayla Graham (29th, 55.09), Jacqueline Hendrix (35th, 56.11), Kathleen Lynch (38th, 56.72) and Kailyn Swantek (40th, 59.47) all in action.
