GREENSBORO, N.C.—The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving program saw three swimmers and three divers score individually for the Panthers during Thursday's full day of action at the 2020 ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Senior swimmer Valerie Daigneault secured points for the Panthers for the fourth consecutive year, finishing with an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a top time of 1:58.33 to boost her team by 16 points in the meet.
Also scoring in swimming, senior Madelyn Shaffer and sophomore Madison Nalls each advanced in the 500-yard freestyle. The freestyle tandem combined for six points, with Shaffer placing 20th with a top time of 4:47.01 and Nalls taking 24th in 4:50.08. The sophomore swam a top time of 4:49.73 in the preliminary session to qualify for the evening's finals.
Thursday's swimming action concluded with Pitt's 200-yard freestyle relay of Kate Fuhrmann, Valerie Daigneault, Kailyn Swantek and Madelyn Shaffer finishing eighth in 1:30.40 – the second consecutive day that the Panthers produced a top-eight relay finish.
"The seniors really stepped up today," Pitt head coach John Hargis said. "Val and Maddie truly led us with their competitive spirit. Overall, we're swimming great as a team. We can't wait to continue competing tomorrow with what will be a very important day in this meet."
On the second full day of springboard diving at the ACC Championships, a trio of Panthers scored.
For the women on 3-meter springboard, sophomores Serena Buchwald (16th, 247.00) and Amy Read (17th, 245.75) tallied a combined 20 team points for the Panthers after contending for the final.
Freshman Dylan Reed scored for the men for the second straight day, placing 15th with a total of 278.30 on 1-meter springboard to secure 12 points for the Pitt men's team.
"The divers had a really good day," Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton said. "Amy and Serena were so close to advancing to finals. It's exciting to see their confidence growing as they head into platform, which is their best event. And Dylan's execution was worthy of finals, his confidence is growing and as he continues to improve and develop, he will be a genuine contender in this conference. Platform should be a great opportunity to our divers to score well over the next two days."
Also competing in diving for the Panthers on Thursday, sophomores Josh Parquet and Wesley Ahart took 31st and 33rd, respectively, on 1-meter, while senior Krista Jones placed 36th in 3-meter action.
