Champagnie Earns CBS Sports / USBWA National Freshman of the Week Honors

PITTSBURGH – Justin Champagnie earned CBS Sports / USBWA Freshman of the Week accolades after averaging 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as Pitt split a pair of games at Notre Dame and against Georgia Tech. He shot 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field, including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from three-point range, and made all five free throw attempts as the Panthers moved to 15-9 overall and 6-7 in the ACC.
Champagnie becomes the first Panther to earn a national weekly award since Tray Woodall was named USBWA Oscar Robertson Player of the Week Feb. 6, 2012.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native recorded the 20th 20/10 game by a Pitt freshman in program history finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a narrow loss at Notre Dame. He had 16 points and eight rebounds in the second half of play in the contest.
He capped the week off with the fourth 30+ point scoring game by a Panther freshman in a win over Georgia Tech Saturday. Champagnie scored a season-high 30 points to go along with nine rebounds and two steals in the 73-64 win. He went 12-of-17 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 3-of-3 from the foul line. The 12 made field goals is tied for the second most in a game by a Pitt freshman.
Champagnie is second on the team in scoring and tied for fourth among ACC freshmen at 12.6 ppg. He also leads the Panthers in rebounding and is third among ACC freshmen at 7.3 rpg. He ranks among the all-time Pitt freshman leaders in scoring (4th - 12.6 ppg.), double-figure scoring games (8th – 16), 20-point games (T-4th – 5), rebounds (11th – 7.3 rpg.), double-figure rebounding games (T-6th – 6) and double-doubles (T-5th – 5).
Pitt returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. against Clemson at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt will collaborate with Coaching for Literacy to help fight childhood illiteracy at Wednesday's game. Coaches and staff will wear ties and lapel pins to help raise awareness.
