PITTSBURGH – The 10th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team dropped its first ACC match of the season to fourth-ranked NC State, 21-12, at the Fitzgerald Field House Saturday night.
With the loss, Pitt falls to 7-3 overall and 1-1 against ACC foes. NC State remains undefeated, improving to 12-0 and 2-0 in the ACC.
The match was highlighted by No. 24 redshirt junior Gregg Harvey upsetting No. 14 Daniel Bullard in a 10-8 decision at 174 pounds.
"Some of them did well, but we all need to get better," said head coach Keith Gavin. "But, we were happy with some of the guys and the way they got after it. It's a little different than the last time we wrestled a top team. The last time we wrestled Oklahoma State we were a little hesitant, but here we got after it a little more so we were happy to see that. But, there were also some weights where we need to see a better effort."
Starting at 197 pounds, redshirt senior Kellan Stout gave Pitt its first win of the match defeating Tyrie Houghton in a 5-3 decision. Stout used a reversal in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and take the lead for his seventh win of the season.
Moving to heavyweight, eighth-ranked senior Demetrius Thomas picked up his 16th win of the year after defeating No. 32 Deonte Wilson in a 6-2 decision. The back-to-back wins gave the Panthers a 6-0 lead in the dual.
Pitt dropped its first bout at 125 pounds after redshirt freshman Louis Newell lost in a major decision to No. 21 Jakob Camacho.
At 133 pounds, sixth-ranked redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi outlasted No. 26 Jarrett Trombley, 4-0. After a scoreless first period, Phillippi used an escape early in the second period to score the only point of the period and to take a 1-0 lead. Phillippi then used an escape and takedown in the third to come away with the win to put Pitt up 9-4.
Pitt then dropped four consecutive bouts to give the Wolfpack an 18-9 lead.
At 174 pounds, Harvey secured an impressive win over No. 14 Daniel Bullard in a back-and-forth battle. Harvey scored a takedown in the final seconds to secure the victory.
In the last bout of the match, ninth-ranked redshirt sophomore Nino Bonaccorsi dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 3 Trent Hidlay, giving NC State a 21-12 win.
The Panthers will be back in action Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. versus Virginia.
