PITTSBURGH—Pitt senior defensive end Patrick Jones II has been named a first team All-American by Sporting News, it was announced this morning.
Jones' honor marks the 94th first-team All-America citation in Pitt football history. He was joined on Sporting News All-America Team by fellow senior defensive end Rashad Weaver, who was a second-team selection.
Weaver was previously named a first team All-American by The Associated Press. The last time the Panthers produced two first team All-Americans at the same position in a single season was 1982 when legendary offensive tackles Jimbo Covert and Bill Fralic were honored.
The last time Pitt had two first team All-Americans on the defensive side of the ball in the same season was 1977 (tackle Randy Holloway and safety Bob Jury).
The Sporting News All-America Team is one of five squads recognized by the NCAA. In addition to the previously announced Associated Press team, the other selectors are the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Jones and Weaver combined for 16.5 quarterback sacks this season, the highest sack total by a pair of teammates in the Atlantic Coast Conference and tied for first nationally.

Jones (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) compiled 44 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine sacks and a fumble recovery. He led the ACC and ranked fourth in the nation in total sacks. Jones was sixth in the ACC and 14th nationally in total TFLs.

Weaver (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cooper City) totaled 35 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery this season. He led the ACC in sacks (0.83 avg., 17th nationally) and tackles for loss (1.6 avg., 16th nationally) per game.
Weaver and Jones have both accepted an invitation to play in the prestigious Reese's Senior Bowl, which annually showcases the country's elite pro prospects. The game, nationally televised by NFL Network, will be held on January 30, 2021, at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
