
Panthers Open ACC Play with 70-55 Victory at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Ithiel Horton made four three-pointers and scored 18 points, while Au'Diese Toney added 15 as the Panthers opened conference play 1-0 for the second consecutive year with a 70-55 road victory at Miami.
Both teams started off slow, with the Panthers going 1-for-5 out of the gate through the first four and a half minutes. Nike Sibande, making his first career appearance as a Panther, made his first shot of the game and gave Pitt a 5-4 lead with 15:24 in the first.
The Panthers led by nine (25-16) with 3:31 to play, before Miami went on a 9-2 run to end the half and trailed by two, 27-25, at the break. Pitt had 15 personal fouls and shot just 1-for-7 from beyond the arc in at the break.
Pitt jumped out to a seven point lead after a Toney made three early in the second (34-27), but the Hurricanes answered with eight straight points, including two threes to take a 35-34 advantage with 15:45 to play.
Pitt regained the lead after a Horton three and used a 19-2 scoring run to lead, 53-37, at the 9:14 mark of the second half. The Panthers led by as much as 18 twice and held a double-digit lead for the remaining 10:19 of the contest.
Horton, who went 0-for-1 from deep in the first half, went four-for-five in the second and registered a season-best 18 points. Justin Champagnie, who played a season-low 24 points, led the team with nine rebounds and recorded 10 points. Toney tallied five rebounds, three assists and two steals to go along with his 15 points.
The Panthers finished the second half 6-for-10 from three and went 7-of-17 for the game. Pitt outrebounded the Hurricanes, 43-29, and scored 27 points off turnovers.
Pitt is back on the court Tuesday, Dec. 22 at home against Louisville. Tip-off begins at 7 p.m. with coverage on the Regional Sports Network and 93.7 theFan.
