PITTSBURGH—Pitt junior punter Kirk Christodoulou, who played a critical role in the Panthers' 41-17 victory over Florida State, has been named the Ray Guy Award's National Punter of the Week, it was announced today by the Augusta Sports Council.
Christodoulou averaged 51.0 yards (gross and net) on five punts, placing two inside the Seminoles' 15-yard line. His high, arching punts prevented Florida State from registering a single return yard.
After Pitt fell behind, 14-3, in the first quarter, Christodoulou boomed his long punt of 58 yards that flipped the field from the Panthers' 28 to the FSU 14. Three plays later, cornerback A.J. Woods intercepted a Seminoles pass to set up a short touchdown drive. The punt and turnover sparked the Panthers outscoring Florida State 38-3 the rest of the way.
On the year, Christodoulou is averaging 44.7 yards on 38 punts to rank fifth in the ACC and 20th nationally. He has placed 17 inside the 20-yard line with only one touchback.
Christodoulou is the latest Australian punter to make an impact on the American game of football. A graduate of Melbourne's Balwyn High School, he worked with the renowned Prokick Australia program that has produced many successful NFL punters, including the Pittsburgh Steelers' Jordan Berry, the San Francisco 49ers' Mitch Wishnowsky, the Seattle Seahawks' Michael Dickson as well as the Philadelphia Eagles' Cameron Johnston.
The Ray Guy Award is annually presented to the nation's top collegiate punter. The 2020 recipient will be unveiled on ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on a date to be determined.
Christodoulou and the Panthers (4-4, 3-4 ACC) play at Georgia Tech (2-5, 2-4) this Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised locally by AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh.
