PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University have agreed to extend the Backyard Brawl presented by EQT through the 2023-24 basketball season, pushing this season's game, originally scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13, after the two additional games that were added to the series back in June.
In late September, the NCAA announced the start of the 2020-21 basketball season as Nov. 25 and reduced the number of games teams are permitted to play due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pitt and West Virginia resumed the Backyard Brawl series with a four-game agreement that began during the 2017-18 season. This season's contest was to be the final game of the agreement but the two schools added games in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons to the series.
Pitt and West Virginia have played 187 times, the most played series for the Panthers all-time against an opponent.
Pitt and West Virginia met for the first time in 1904, playing a pair of games prior to basketball becoming a varsity sport at the university. The first official contest between the two schools resulted in a 30-25 Pitt victory Feb. 17, 1906. Last season, the Panthers were unable to overcome a cold-shooting second half in a loss to the Mountaineers.
