Women’s Swimming & Diving, Wrestling Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Valerie Daigneault of women's swimming & diving and Gregg Harvey of wrestling were named the Office Depot Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Daigneault, a senior, paced Pitt women's swimming to a dominant dual-meet victory over the rival West Virginia Mountaineers, winning both backstroke events in the Backyard Brawl Saturday in Morgantown. Daigneault helped ensure that the senior class for the Pitt women's team finished their collegiate careers with a 4-0 dual-meet record against WVU by taking first in the 100 Back (56.03) and also winning the 200 Back (2:00.55) by several seconds. Daigneault's results scored maximum points for the Panthers on the way to a 175-125 team triumph over the Mountaineers.
Harvey, a redshirt junior wrestler, ended 2019 on a high note, recording his first win over a ranked opponent Dec. 20 at Maryland. He defeated 20th-ranked Philip Spadaroa in a tight 5-4 decision. The team went on to defeat the Terrapins, 27-10. At the Southern Scuffle, Harvey won four consecutive matches to advance to the finals where he fell to Carter Starocci of Penn State (unattached). Prior to his loss to Starocci, Harvey had not lost since Nov. 15 in the Ohio State dual. Harvey is now 7-3 in tournaments and 11-5 overall this season.
Up next, the Pitt swimming & diving teams will host Denison at Trees Pool Friday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. ET.
Pitt wrestling will travel to Stillwater, Okla., for its next match against Oklahoma State Saturday, Jan. 18, at 8 p.m. ET.
