Diving, Wrestling Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Serena Buchwald of women's diving and Micky Phillippi of wrestling were named the Office Depot Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Buchwald, a sophomore, was the stand-out women's performer during Friday's diving action at Trees Pool in the 2020 Western Pennsylvania Invitational. She dominated the field in the 3-meter springboard competition, posting a career-best score of 313.95 to win easily with an NCAA Zone qualifying standard. She also posted a strong score of 284.95 to place second on 1-meter springboard with another NCAA Zone cut. Buchwald's points helped the Pitt women's team sweep the meet, defeating local rivals Duquesne, Carnegie Mellon, St. Francis (PA) and California (PA) over the weekend.
Phillippi helped the Panthers go undefeated on the weekend, beating Duke 50-0 and Edinboro 28-6. He scored six points for Pitt against Duke when he pinned his opponent in four minutes and one second. He then earned the Panthers five points versus the Fighting Scots when he scored 10 takedowns en route to a 12-3 win. With his two wins, Phillippi improves to 18-1 on the season, to go along with a No. 6 ranking in the Jan. 20 Coaches' Panel Rankings.
Up next, the Pitt swimming & diving teams will host Ohio State Friday at 1 p.m. at Trees Pool.
Pitt wrestling will host NC State Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
