PITTSBURGH—Hosting the annual Western Pennsylvania Invitational at Trees Pool, the University of Pittsburgh divers dominated the field en route to winning all four diving events on Friday afternoon.
Sophomores Serena Buchwald and Amy Read combined to win the 3-meter and 1-meter events, respectively, while freshman Dylan Reed swept the men's springboard competitions in style.
Buchwald won on 3-meter with a score of 313.95 and finished second on 1-meter with 284.95. Read triumphed on 1-meter with a tally of 303.30 and took runner-up placement on 3-meter with 297.55.
Reed was victorious decisively in both men's diving events, posting impressive final scores of 363.35 on the 1-meter springboard and 371.70 on the 3-meter springboard.
"Amy, Serena and Dylan each dove really well today," said Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton of Friday's event winners. "This entire team continues to train hard and practice with a purpose, which we are confident is going to produce great results later this season at the ACC Championships and NCAA Zone Diving meet."
Also producing strong women's performances for the Panthers were seniors Krista Jones and Cortnee Williams. Jones placed third on 1-meter with a score of 284.75 and accumulated 263.15 on 3-meter, while Williams finished third on 3-meter with a tally of 290.65 and scored a 279.10 on 1-meter.
Also representing the Panthers on the men's side, sophomore Josh Parquet finished second on 3-meter (308.55) and 1-meter (298.30), while fellow sophomore Wesley Ahart dove well on all three boards.
Freshman Meredith Gould drew a big ovation from her teammates after she completed a 1-meter springboard score of 269.8, surpassing the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard in the event.
Senior Lisa Coe posted a score of 242.05 on 1-meter and then also was greeted by excited teammates after achieving her first career NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard after competing on platform.
"It really shows how much quality depth we have in this group of divers," Hazelton said, highlighting the fact that nine Pitt divers are now eligible to compete at the NCAA Zone Diving meet this season. "We're really excited that Meredith and Lisa finished with Zone scores today. It's been a goal for them all season, so it was very rewarding for them to achieve that."
Freshman Ali Giuliani also dove well on platform after tallying a score 236.65 on 1-meter springboard in Friday's action in front of a nice crowd at Trees Pool.
The Western Pennsylvania Invitational will continue on Saturday at 11 a.m. with swimming action. Pitt will honor 15 seniors with a ceremony to celebrate their contributions to the program.
The first 100 fans to come to Trees Pool on Saturday will receive a free Pitt swimming & diving towel.
Admission is FREE for all fans for both days of the Western PA Invite at Trees Pool.
