Panthers Resume Action Saturday, Jan. 25 at Duke
STILLWATER, Okla. – The 10th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 30-10, Saturday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 5-2 while the Cowboys improve to 7-1 on the year.
Two Pitt wrestlers secured wins in the dual in redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds and senior heavyweight Demetrius Thomas.
"It was a disappointing loss," said head coach Keith Gavin. "We got outworked in a lot of matches and that's just unacceptable. Micky was a good example of what it looks like to be gritty in a tough situation and Meech wrestled well. We need to learn from this and move forward."
Following an Oklahoma State pin at 125 pounds, Phillippi tied the dual, 6-6, with a pin of his own at 133 pounds. Phillippi pinned Reece Witcraft in 4:04 after trailing 7-0 in the second period. With the win, Phillippi improves to 16-1 on the year.
Thomas led Austin Harris 4-2 at the end of the first and scored a takedown in the second to lead 6-3 through two period. The senior recorded eight points in the third to secure his 14th win and sixth major decision this season.
The Panthers open ACC competition Saturday, Jan. 25 when they travel to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke at 10 a.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Pitt then hosts Edinboro Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Fitzgerald Field House.
