Hoernlein Leads Pitt Women To Team Title At Galen Piper Invitational

SHIPPENSBURG, PA – For the second straight meet to open up the 2019 campaign, the Pitt women's cross country team notched a team victory on Friday night at the 10th annual Galen Piper Invitational hosted by Shippensburg University. Sophomore Devon Hoernlein paced the Panthers with her first collegiate victory.
The Pitt women finished off their impressive evening with 15 points as the next closest team, Shippensburg, posted a team score of 54.
Hoernlein backed up her third place finish in the season-opener for the Panthers with the first individual victory of her collegiate career on Friday night. The sophomore ran away with the victory down the backstretch as she crossed the finish line in 14:40.10, three seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
The Pitt women had six of the top eight finishers on Friday night as Corinne Firestone took home third place in 15:03.50, Lily Robertson took home fourth place in 15:18.00 and Sarah Frick notched a fifth place finish in 15:19.50. Katrina Durrwachter and Emily Bonaventure took home sixth and eighth place, respectively.
On the men's side, the Panthers only had three guys competing on Friday night as sophomore Nick Cardamone notched his best finish of the early going for Pitt as he crossed the line in second place in 19:29.50. Tyler Senall and Jackson Morton also finished off their second race of the season, crossing the finish line in 15th and 18th place, respectively.
The Panthers will now have almost a month off as they prepare for the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh on Saturday, October 5.
