Cross Country Heads To Galen Piper Invitational On Friday Night

PITTSBURGH – After a dominating start to their season, the University of Pittsburgh men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Shippensburg, PA, to compete in the Galen Piper Invitational on Sept. 6 at 8:00 pm. The Panthers won both the men's and women's races last week in their season opener at the Carrie Blast Furnace in Swissvale, PA.

- A meet recap and results will be posted on PittsburghPanthers.com following the completion of the meet.
- On the men's side, Tyler Senall, Nick Cardamone and Jackson Morton will be making the trip to Shippensburg.
- For the women, Devon Hoernlein, Sarah Frick, Corinne Firestone, Katrina Durrwachter, Megan Nagy, Mary Borkoski, Emily Bonaventure, Maura Gallagher, Caroline Bolen and Lily Robertson will be representing the Panthers.
- Senior Nick Wolk led the men's team in the season opener, collecting the victory in the men's 6K. Transfer Brenda Ayuk led the women's team, coming in second place overall.
- Wolk's performance helped the men's team score just 16 points in the meet. Pitt had the top four finishers and five of the top six. On the women's side, Pitt earned 28 points and had four of the seven finishers in the 4K.
- Junior Zach Lefever made things interesting, fist-bumping Wolk as they crossed the finished line to come in second place. Wolk finished just .2 second ahead of Lefever. Sophomore Evan Addison, freshman Jack Miller, junior Josh Higgins and junior Nick Cardamone finished out the rest of Pitt's top finishers on the men's side.
- Sophomore Devon Hoernlein finshed right behind Ayuk to notch a third place finish. Senior captain Sam Shields came in fifth and freshman Corinne Firestone finished out Pitt's top ten finishers with a seventh place mark.
- Miller and Firestone's top finishes earned them both ACC Freshmen of the Week Honors. That marked the first time since joining the ACC that Panthers have swept the Freshmen of the Week Honors. Miller was the second Panther in program history to earn the honor, while Firestone was the first female in program history to be named Freshman of the Week.
- In the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason Regional Rankings, released Monday, the Pitt men were selected ninth while the women were picked 10th.
- The Panthers will return to action next month as they head to Bethlehem, PA, for the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh.
