Panthers Set for Road Contest against Eagles
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team will hit the road for an ACC matchup with Boston College 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 at Newton Soccer Field.

LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt earned a 1-0 victory over Akron Monday, Sept. 16 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
- Both teams were scoreless through most of the match before a strike from junior Alexander Dexter from the left of the box gave the Panthers a 1-0 advantage they'd never relinquish.
- Junior Edward Kizza closed the match with a team-high four shots, followed by senior Braden Kline with three. Dexter, junior Matt Bailey and freshman Valentin Noel each recorded two shots, while redshirt junior Tim Ekpone, juniors Sito Sena and Chad Stout, sophomore Rodrigo Almeida and freshman Josh Hesson all added one shot apiece.
- In goal, redshirt junior Arie Ammann recorded the clean sheet while collecting four saves in 90 minutes of action.
SIZING UP THE 2019 SLATE
- Pitt faces some tough competition in the 2019 season, with a schedule that includes 10 NCAA Tournament teams and two NCAA College Cup squads from a year ago.
- The Panthers have already faced then-ranked No. 2 Indiana, No. 1 Wake Forest and RV Akron on the season, and are set to square off with six other teams either ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll in No. 5 Virginia, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 15 Duke, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 17 Virginia Tech and RV Boston College.
KIZZA COMMANDING ATTENTION
- Junior Edward Kizza closed out his 2018 campaign tied for third in program history for single-season goals (15) while ranking fifth in points (30).
- Kizza ranked fifth in goals nationally, ninth in shot accuracy (.622) and 11th in points per game (1.67), while ranking first in each category among ACC players.
- The historic season led Kizza to First Team All-ACC honors, Second Team All-Region recognition and a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team.
- Through six games, Kizza paces the team in shots (22), shots on goal (nine), points (eight) and goals (four).
- The Kampala, Uganda, native picked up right where he left off to start the 2019 season, recording a brace against No. 2 Indiana in the squad's season-opener Friday, Aug. 30. In the match, Kizza recorded the fastest consecutive goals in program history after scoring at the 35:24 and 35:31 mark, with the seven-second difference besting the old record of 34 seconds set by Michael Tuohy and John Cordier in 2013.
FRESHMEN FOCUS
- The Panthers freshmen class has made an immediate impact through the first six games of the 2019 season.
- Five freshmen have already seen playing time through the early stretch of the season in Lucas Cyriacus, Josh Hesson, Valentin Noel, Arturo Ordonez and Veljko Petkovic, with starts from Noel (six), Hesson (four), Ordonez (four) and Petkovic (two).
- Hesson and Petkovic have also each added one goal apiece on the year.
THE SERIES – BOSTON COLLEGE
- Through 18 previous contests, the Eagles currently own a 12-4-2 all-time series edge against the Panthers.
- The two teams' last meeting came in 2016, with Boston College securing a 1-0 road victory against Pitt.
- The Panthers' last win in the series came via a 1-0 home victory over the Eagles in 2003.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- Boston College enters Friday's contest with a 4-1 [0-1 ACC] record, most recently dropping a 1-0 road matchup to NC State in its conference opener Saturday, Sept. 14.
- The Eagles are currently receiving votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Poll released Tuesday, Sept. 17.
- Boston College is coached by Ed Kelly, who owns a 285-236-64 record during his time with the Eagles and a 325-249-70 all-time record after spending time at both Boston College and Seton Hall.
- Through five games, freshman Amos Shapiro-Thompson leads the Eagles' offense with two goals, while six other players have added one goal apiece.
- In goal, freshman keeper Giacomo Piccardo has started all five matches for Boston College, recording 13 saves while allowing four goals.
