PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's cross country teams opened up their 2019 campaigns in impressive fashion as they both collected team victories in the Pitt Panther Opener, the first home meet for Pitt in over two decades. Friday's home meet took place at one of the most unique venues in the NCAA, the Carrie Blast Furnaces in Swissvale, PA.
Senior Captain Nick Wolk collected the men's 6K victory while on the women's side transfer Brenda Ayuk took home a second place finish to pace Pitt.
As a team, the Pitt men totaled just 16 points as they had the top four finishers and five of the top six. Bucknell came in second place with 61 points followed by Kent State with 66 and Marshall with 77. On the women's side, the Panthers earned the team title with a total of 28 points as they had four of the top-seven finishers in the 4K event.
Although the Pitt men won the 6K race by a considerable amount, there was still some drama at the finish line as Wolk and junior Zach Lefever fist-bumped and crossed the line at nearly the same time. The great moment by the two teammates created pictures that will last forever as Wolk was able to narrowly take the individual crown in 17:50.26, just .2 seconds ahead of friend and teammate Lefever.
Coming in right behind Wolk and Lefever on Friday night were sophomore Evan Addison who crossed the line in third place in 17:55.46 and freshman Jack Miller who took home fourth place in his first collegiate race in 17:55.63. Junior Josh Higgins also had a strong showing for Pitt as he took sixth place in 18:05.72. Newcomer Nick Cardamone posted a solid finish as he crossed the line in 20th place in his first race for the Panthers.
The women opened up the eventful evening of cross country action with a strong performance in the 4K race as newcomer Brenda Ayuk led most of the race until ultimately taking home second place in 14:19.11. Sophomore Devon Hoernlein posted a great final lap as she finished right behind Ayuk in third place, finishing in 14:21.47. Senior captain Sam Shields posted a strong start to her final campaign as she notched a fifth place finish in 14:25.73 while freshman Corinne Firestone closed strong and crossed the finish line in 14:36.27 to secure seventh place overall. Three other Panthers were able to secure top-20 times on Friday as freshman Maura Gallagher finished in 11th place, Sarah Frick notched a 14th place finish and freshman Lily Robertson placed 19th in her first collegiate race.
Up next for the Panthers will be a trip to Shippensburg, PA to compete in the Galen Piper Invitational on Friday, September 6.
