GWANGJU, South Korea—After representing his home country at the World University Games in Naples, Italy, earlier in July, rising University of Pittsburgh senior swimmer Eben Vorster is now in Gwangju to compete for South Africa at the 2019 FINA World Championships.
After winning the South African national title in the 200-meter individual medley in April, Vorster booked his trip to the 2019 World Championships in South Korea – one year ahead of next summer's 2020 Summer Olympics set to be held in Tokyo.
He began his meet with a 44th-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:51.70 and is scheduled to swim the 200-meter individual medley on Wednesday in Gwangju.
Vorster's appearance at the premier annual international swimming meet continues a summer of worldwide success for some of head coach John Hargis' talented squad.
At the World University Games, not only did Vorster compete in two events for South Africa, but fellow rising Pitt senior Samy Helmbacher also raced for France in two individual events, highlighted by his finals appearance and fifth-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley.
Since the collegiate season concluded, Pitt swimmers and divers have been competing across the world at various domestic national championships as well, including meets in Canada, France, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Several Panthers will also next week travel to Stanford, Calif., for the 2019 USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships to challenge America's top athletes in the pool from July 31 through Aug. 4.
