NAPLES, Italy—Two Pitt men's swimmers—Samy Helmbacher and Eben Vorster—have traveled to the Italian coast to represent their nations and the University of Pittsburgh at the 30th Summer Universiade of the World University Games, which will be hosted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in Naples from July 3-14.
Both rising Pitt seniors, Helmbacher and Vorster are slated to compete for France and South Africa, respectively, when swimming events begin on Thursday, July 4 at Piscina Felice Scandone.
Helmbacher is scheduled for the 200-meter individual medley and the 400-meter individual medley for the French team; Vorster will look to boost South Africa's hopes in the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle relays while also competing in the 200-meter butterfly individually as well.
"We're extremely proud of Samy and Eben and excited for them to have the chance to participate in the World University Games," Pitt head coach John Hargis said of Helmbacher and Vorster. "It's going to be a great experience for them both and a wonderful opportunity to compete at the highest level."
Earning the right to represent one's country at the World University Games is often a precursor to having a chance to qualify for the Olympic Games, making the biennial event a showcase for some of the world's top sporting talents that are currently attending universities across the world.
