Incoming Freshman Veljko Petkovic Helps Lead NYCFC to Second Consecutive U19 Championship
PITTSBURGH – Incoming University of Pittsburgh men's soccer freshman Veljko Petkovic helped lead New York City FC's (NYCFC) U19 squad to a US Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) National Championship Wednesday, July 10, marking the team's second U19 championship in as many years.
Petkovic played a vital role in helping NYCFC secure their second consecutive U19 title, opening the scoring with a goal from the middle of the box in the 15th minute. The goal proved to be crucial in what ended up being a 2-1 final over top-seeded FC Dallas.
The Hiš, Serbia, native finished NYCFC's 2019 season ranked second on the team with 15 goals while appearing in 25 games and starting 24 matches for the club.
Petkovic was also a part of the 2018 squad, along with sophomore keeper Johan Penaranda, who captured last year's championship. The midfielder tallied 12 goals in 28 appearances for NYCFC, including 18 starts.
Petkovic is currently one of five newcomers for the 2019 Panthers, with Pitt also adding transfers Arie Ammann, Matt Bailey and Braden Kline along with fellow freshman Luke Mort.
