Baseball, Track & Field Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Miranda Salvo of women's track & field, Dan Hammer of baseball and Greg Lauray of men's track & field were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Salvo, a senior, had another strong weekend on the track for the Panthers at the 125th Penn Relays as she competed in three different distance races. She the third leg for the Panthers' distance medley relay team on Thursday night and helped them set a school record in the event, crossing the finish line in 11:33.89. The quartet of Makenzie Zeh, Breanna Phillips, Salvo and Ally Brunton broke the old school record by over seven seconds. Salvo also competed in the Olympic Development mile run, posting a season-best time of 4:56.41, as well as the 1500m run in which she finished in third place in 4:35.07.
Hammer, a junior, put together a career performance in Pitt's series-clenching victory over Presbyterian Saturday afternoon. The junior went a career-long eight innings, holding the Blue Hose scoreless. He limited a strong Presbyterian offense to just five hits, only one of which was extra bases, walking just one batter. Hammer tied a career-high strikeout output, whiffing 11 on the afternoon. The strikeout performance marked the third time this season that Hammer has tallied double digit strikeouts and was the second highest by a Panther pitcher on the season.
Lauray, a sophomore, had an impressive weekend for the Panthers at his second Penn Relays as he was able to claim the victory in the high jump on Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at Franklin Field. Lauray edged out his opponent from Penn State with a new school record and personal best leap of 2.18m (7'1.75"). His winning leap is the second best in the ACC this season and the sophomore now holds the school record in the indoor high jump and the outdoor high jump.
Salvo and Lauray will compete next at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, set for May 9-11 in Charlottesville, Va.
Hammer and the Panthers return to action this week, hosting Maryland Eastern Shore Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 1 p.m. before traveling to ACC powerhouse Florida State this weekend.
