Blue-Gold, Panther Award Winners Recognized
PITTSBURGH – Pitt Athletics held its first Varsity Walk Ceremony Monday morning at the Cathedral of Learning to celebrate the winners of the prestigious Blue-Gold and Panther Awards.
Winners in attendance were Blue-Gold recipients Darrin Hall (football) and Gillian Schriever (track & field, cross country) and Panther Award recipient Kamalani Akeo (volleyball). Javi Perez (men's soccer – Blue-Gold Award) and Qadree Ollison (football – Panther Award) were unable to attend as they are pursuing their professional athletic careers in the MLS and NFL, respectively.
In a tradition that dates back to 1950, these recipients will be forever recognized on the Varsity Walk between the Cathedral of Learning and Heinz Chapel. The 2018-19 Blue-Gold and Panther Awards were announced at the 2019 Panthers' Choice Awards April 15.
In addition to remarks from Director of Athletics Heather Lyke and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Life Penny Semaia, former Pitt gymnast and Blue-Gold winner Alisa Spector Angelo also spoke.
The Blue-Gold award is presented to the male and female senior student-athlete who best represents the student-athlete "ideal" based on academic scholarship, athletic achievement, leadership qualities and citizenship.
The Panther Award is presented to the male and female senior student-athlete who has promoted Pittsburgh Athletics through his or her outstanding athletic achievement.
