Blue Team Triumphs in Pitt Football Spring Game

PITTSBURGH—Wide receiver Tre Tipton caught two touchdowns from quarterback Kenny Pickett to lead the Blue Team to a 14-7 victory on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field in the 2019 Pitt Football Blue-Gold Game presented by PNC.
Tipton, who hours before the game had been named a recipient of the Ed Conway Award as one of Pitt's most improved players this spring, validated that selection by hauling in two impressive scores in the second half.
The Gold Team's lone touchdown came on an 11-yard Davis Beville pass in the final seconds to tight end Will Gragg as the Panthers displayed a revamped passing game.
After a spring working with new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, Pitt's quarterbacks combined to pass for 425 yards in the Spring Game. Beville, an early enrollee, led the way with 157 passing yards while Pickett completed 10-of-14 passes for 125 yards and two TDs.
Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi was impressed with what he saw from Pitt's passing game, especially Pickett, the team's returning starter from last season's ACC Coastal Division winners.
"His feet are better in the pocket," Narduzzi said of Pickett. "There were some changes that Coach Whipple wanted to make just as far as his fundamentals. The ball is coming a lot quicker out of his hands. I think that's the most impressive thing we saw. The ball is being thrown on time and before the receivers are out of their break, the ball's coming. That will make our offensive line better."
The defenses dominated the first half of Saturday's contest, which was played with 10-minute quarters.
Leading the way for Pitt defensively was safety Paris Ford, who posted a game-high seven tackles and intercepted a Beville pass in the end zone in the fourth quarter. Linebackers Cam Bright and Chase Pine also recorded six tackles apiece.
The teams finished with minus-32 rushing yards in the game, but that was aided by several touch sacks of the quarterbacks in red jerseys.
