
Pitt Swimmers Earn Individual Medals on International Stage

PITTSBURGH—Three University of Pittsburgh swimmers displayed their talents on the international stage this week while competing against the top competition from their respective home nations.
Pitt junior Eben Vorster excelled and earned an individual title at the South African National Championships in Durban, while senior John Fauteux and junior Valerie Daigneault both shined at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto.
Vorster announced his status as one of South Africa's premier swimmers, winning the 200-meter individual medley on Friday in 2:02.71 and swimming a time of 50.39 in the 100-meter freestyle to qualify for the 2019 FINA World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, South Korea as part of the South African 4x100 free relay squad.
Pitt's Bloemfontein native also finished second in the 200-meter freestyle (1:50.48), third in the 200-meter butterfly (1:58.44), third in the 100-meter butterfly (53.89) to earn four podium finishes while racing against South Africa's best this week in Durban. He also posted the third best qualifying time in the 400-meter freestyle (4:00.38).
Vorster is now eligible to represent South Africa at the World Championships, which will be held in Gwangju from July 12-28. The Pitt junior also qualified for the 2019 World University Games set to be hosted in Naples, Italy from July 3-14 in five different events.
"We're extremely excited for Eben," Pitt swimming & diving head coach John Hargis said. "One of the primary goals of our program is to help athletes reach the highest levels of swimming. Every athlete dreams of representing their country. For Eben to win a national title and be eligible to compete for South Africa at the World Championships is a tremendous achievement. We're so proud of him."
At Canadian Trials, Fauteux also posted a podium finish to take third in the 50-meter breaststroke with a finals time of 28.61. The Pitt senior also placed 12th in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:03.53.
Daigneault also impressed at the meet in Toronto, placing 14th in the 200-meter backstroke, 18th in the 200-meter individual medley, 28th in the 100-meter backstroke and 32nd in the 200-meter freestyle.
Vorster and Daigneault, who will be rising seniors for the Panthers next season, recently modeled the Pitt swimming & diving team's newly revealed suits and caps that will be wore starting in 2019-20.
