Women’s Basketball, Men’s Swimming Student-Athletes Awarded Weekly Honors
PITTSBURGH – Jasmine Whitney of women's basketball and Blaise Vera of men's swimming & diving were awarded Pittsburgh Student-Athlete of the Week honors after impressive performances in their respective sports this past week.
Whitney, a junior point guard, continued her strong play for the Panthers last week as she averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals across a 1-1 week for Pitt. On Thursday, Whitney had the best game of her career as she netted her second career double-double with 19 points, a career-high 12 assists, six rebounds and three steals as the Panthers collected a road win at Wake Forest, 70-64. The junior then chipped in with eight points and a team-high four assists on Sunday against No. 3 Louisville. On the season, Whitney is averaging a career-high 9.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds while starting the last 27 games at point guard. She has tied a career-high with 134 assists on the season as she moved into ninth place on the Panthers all-time assists charts last time out. Whitney is the only current player in the ACC with 100 or more assists in three consecutive seasons.
Vera, a sophomore, was one of the breakout performers at the 2019 ACC Championships last week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. While only two Pitt men's swimmers had advanced to championship finals previously, Vera advanced to the title-deciding heat in each of his three individual events—the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. The Clinton, Miss., native set the Pitt school record in each event at the meet and earned a silver medal for his runner-up finish in the 100 Free, the best individual men's swimmer for Pitt at the ACC Championships. Vera was also incredible in contributing to four Pitt relays, helping the Panthers set school records in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay.
The 14th-seeded Pitt women's basketball team will face No. 11 seed Duke in the opening round of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. The game will be televised on RSN.
Vera's great times at the ACC Championships have him in a great position to receive an invitation to compete at the NCAA Championships later this month in Austin, Texas.
