PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University have reached an agreement in principle to resume the City Game series in 2020 after a one-year hiatus, as announced jointly by the two institutions Thursday.
"The City Game is a time honored basketball tradition in the city of Pittsburgh," said Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "Unfortunately, our men's basketball scheduling dynamics will not allow us to play the game in 2019. We look forward to resuming the game with great anticipation in 2020 and 2021."
The Atlantic Coast Conference is moving to a 20-game schedule in 2019-20 with 14 of the 15 ACC schools opening the season with a league game as well as another conference game slated for early December. Pitt opens next season at the Petersen Events Center Wednesday, Nov. 6 against Florida State.
As also announced Thursday afternoon, Pitt will help open the Peoples Court at UPMC Events Center with a Tuesday, Nov. 12 road contest against Robert Morris. The Panthers are scheduled to play in Fort Myers Tip-Off Nov. 25-27 with matchups to be announced at a later date. Pitt is joined in the event by 2019 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Bradley and Kansas State along with Northwestern.
Pitt is also scheduled to appear in the 2019 ACC-Big Ten Challenge, which is traditionally played over a four-day span in late November and early December. Matchups and game dates for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge are typically announced in early June.
Pitt has won 18 of the past 20 meetings with Duquesne and leads the all-time series, 55-32. The Panthers topped the Dukes, 74-53, at PPG Paints Arena this past season as Trey McGowens (14), Malik Ellison (13), Jared Wilson-Frame (12) and Xavier Johnson (10) each scored in double figures.
"We are pleased to work with the University of Pittsburgh and our valued partners at PPG Paints Arena to continue the City Game in 2020 and 2021," said Duquesne Director of Athletics Dave Harper. "The very title 'City Game' is profound. This is a game for the city of Pittsburgh and its sports fans. It is an event circled on calendars each year. Duquesne is fully committed to participating in this game long term and honored to be part of this event for the city. We look forward to building the stature of the game and continuing to intensify the game as both programs continue on an upward trajectory."
The Pitt-Duquesne series began during the 1931-32 season and is the fifth-most played series in program history. The Panthers have only played more games against West Virginia (186), Penn State (148), Carnegie-Mellon (124) and Syracuse (116).
