Heather Lyke Honored as 2018 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year
The University of Pittsburgh and Pitt Athletics in particular was represented in exceptional fashion at the 83rd Dapper Dan Dinner & Sports Auction held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center Wednesday night.
Pitt's Director of Athletics Heather Lyke was honored as the 2018 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year. Lyke has dramatically reenergized the Panthers' athletics fortunes during a relatively brief tenure that has not yet reached two years. She was introduced by Chancellor Patrick Gallagher, who both marveled and expressed appreciation for her tremendous impact at Pitt.
All-time great Pitt running back James Conner was honored as the Sportsman of the Year. As just a second-year tailback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Conner rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and was named to the Pro Bowl. He was introduced by another Pitt football icon, Aaron Donald, who was recently named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Many Panthers—student-athletes and coaches alike—were seated on the dais as honored guests. Representing the football team were offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, defensive coordinator Randy Bates, wide receiver Maurice Ffrench, safety Damar Hamlin and cornerback Dane Jackson. From the volleyball team were coach Dan Fisher and outside hitters Zoi Faki and Stephanie Williams. Also in attendance were gymnastics coach Samantha Snider, wrestling coach Keith Gavin as well as Dr. Freddie Fu, Pitt's head team physician and professor and chair for orthopedic surgery for the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences.
