Pitt Begins New Year at Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga
PITTSBURGH – The 10th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team will open 2020 at Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear. The two-day tournament is set for Jan. 1-2 on the campus of University of Tennessee Chattanooga in McKenzie Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt recorded its fourth consecutive dual win of the season with a 27-10 win over Maryland Dec. 20 in College Park.
- With the win, the Panthers improved to 5-1 on the year, while the Terrapins dropped to 1-4.
- Pitt won seven bouts en route to the team win.
- Two Panthers' performances stood out in the team win in redshirt freshman Cole Matthews and redshirt junior Gregg Harvey. Matthews pinned his opponent in 6:53, while Harvey defeated No. 20 Philip Spadafora.
SEVEN PANTHERS EARN PRE-SEEDS
- Seven Pitt wrestlers earned pre-seeds entering the tournament, announced Monday, Dec. 30.
- Two Panthers earned the No. 1 seed in their respective weight classes in redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds and senior Demetrius Thomas at heavyweight.

PITT AT SOUTHERN SCUFFLE
- Pitt is making just its fifth appearance as a team at Southern Scuffle.
- The highest team finish was 8th in 2015.
- Overall, 10 Panthers have reached placed, but have not been crowned champion.
PANTHERS IN THE POLLS
- For the third consecutive week, Pitt ranks No. 10 in the country.
- Pitt returned to the top 10 of the NWCA Rankings Tuesday, Nov. 26 for the first time since 2015.
- Pitt entered the season ranked No. 14 by the NWCA Coaches Poll.
- Individually, six Panthers are ranked inside the top 20 individually by InterMat at their respective weight classes:

LOOKING AHEAD
- The Panthers remain on the road for the beginning of 2020, traveling to Oklahoma State Saturday, Jan. 18 to take on the Cowboys in Stillwater.
- Pitt then heads to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke Saturday, Jan. 25.
- The Panthers return to Pittsburgh for the first time since mid-November Saturday, Jan. 26 to host Edinboro. Action will get underway at 2 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
