PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh men's swimming & diving team was selected as one of the nation's top-25 teams for the 2019-20 campaign in preseason voting by coaches from around the country, the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced Wednesday afternoon.
Pitt landed at No. 24 in the preseason poll with 22 votes, making the Panthers one of seven men's swimming & diving programs from the ACC listed in the sport's most reputable rankings.
"I'm excited for our guys," said Pitt head coach John Hargis, who is in his fourth season with the program. "This just shows the respect that we're garnering nationally. We are building something special here at Pitt, and people are taking notice."
This is the second time in as many years that Hargis' men's team has been ranked by the CSCAA. The Panthers entered the poll at No. 25 in late October 2018, which marked the first time since 2004-05 that the Pitt men's swimming & diving team had been ranked.
Pitt men's swimming & diving is coming off a strong campaign that saw the program earn its first two individual ACC swimming medals, send two swimmers to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2002 and place several relays in the top five in the ACC, which is frequently lauded as the top conference in collegiate men's swimming & diving.
ACC medalists and NCAA qualifiers Samy Helmbacher and Blaise Vera are back for Pitt this year, while seniors Eben Vorster and Luke Smutny highlight a veteran roster, which also includes promising divers Wesley Ahart and Josh Parquet as well as a very promising freshman class.
The Panthers already have two meets completed early in the 2019-20 campaign. Pitt dominated a relays-only swimming meet against local foe Carnegie Mellon at Trees Pool and performed well last weekend in Miami at the FIU TYR Fall Classic, with the men placing second and the women taking third against a competitive field of top teams that included LSU, TCU, FIU, FAU, Army West Point and several others.
Pitt swimming & diving is back in action this Saturday at Trees Pool as the Panthers host a quad meet against Duquesne, Villanova and Youngstown State. Diving events will begin at 8:40 a.m. before long-course meters (LCM) swimming starts at 1 p.m. Admission is FREE for all fans.
