PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh junior Blaise Vera was named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week for the second time already this season after helping the Panthers earn a decisive dual meet victory at Michigan State on Friday evening.
Vera was dominant in both of his individual events, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 19.98 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 44.10 seconds to score maximum team points for his team as the Panthers emerged from East Lansing with a 172-126 men's team win in the ACC-Big Ten matchup.
The Clinton, Miss., native also featured on Pitt's top 400-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay squads during the meet at McCaffree Pool.
A returning ACC medalist and NCAA qualifier, Vera earned ACC Swimmer of the Week honors for the third time of his career. Beyond his two weekly ACC awards in 2019-20, Vera also secured his spot at the 2020 USA Swimming Olympic Team Trials next summer in Omaha, Neb., after meeting the national standard in the 100-meter freestyle in Pitt's most recent home meet on Oct. 12.
Pitt has now received a total of 12 ACC Swimmer or Diver of the Week recognitions under fourth-year head coach John Hargis.
The Panthers are off for the next two weekends before welcoming Notre Dame to Pittsburgh for an exciting ACC meet at Trees Pool on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9. Admission is FREE to all fans.
