PITTSBURGH—Pitt sophomore defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman has been added to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, annually presented to college football's defensive player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Twyman has captured the attention of national observers with a high-impact season. He leads the Panthers with 6.0 sacks and 7.0 total tackles for loss. Twyman ranks 12th in the country with an average of 1.00 sacks per game. Among defensive linemen in the ACC, his sack and TFL totals rank first.
Recognition as a Bednarik Award candidate is the latest honor for Twyman, who last week was named the Outland Trophy National Defensive Player of the Month by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Twyman (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) has been a key cog for a Pitt defense that boasts top-25 national rankings in sacks (4th, 4.50/game), tackles for loss (15th, 8.2/game), pass efficiency defense (11th, 105.62 rating), rushing defense (19th, 97.0 yards/game) and total defense (21st, 298.7 yards/game).
Former Pitt All-America defensive tackle Aaron Donald was the 2013 recipient of the Bednarik Award. Twyman actually changed his number to 97 this season in honor of Donald, who now stars for the Los Angeles Rams.
Bednarik Award semifinalists will be announced on Oct. 29 and three finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 25. The 2019 Bednarik Award winner will be announced during ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards telecast on Dec. 12, live from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Winners of three consecutive games, Pitt (4-2, 1-1) is off this week. The Panthers will resume action on Friday, Oct. 18, when they visit Syracuse (3-2, 0-1) for a national ESPN telecast at 7 p.m.
