Women’s Soccer, Men’s Swimming Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Sydney Marasco of women's soccer and Blaise Vera of men's swimming were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Marasco, a freshman, recorded her first collegiate multi-goal match for Pitt women's soccer in a 3-3 tie Sunday at Miami. Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Marasco sparked the Panthers' comeback with her first goal in the 54th minute. She sent the game into overtime in the 87th minute, hustling to tap in a ball next to the goal line to send the game into overtime.
Vera, a junior, impressed in his 2019-20 debut for Pitt men's swimming, as the returning ACC medalist and NCAA qualifier posted quality times in the Panthers' relay meet against local rival Carnegie Mellon Friday at Trees Pool. Vera's first 50-yard freestyle sprint of the season was timed at 19.94 seconds – good enough for an early season NCAA B-cut mark – as he led off the first leg of a freestyle crescendo relay. Vera also swam an eye-popping 50-yard freestyle split of 19.15 seconds for Pitt's winning 200-yard medley relay as the final leg of that event. Vera also swam the opening legs of the second-place squads in the backstroke and butterfly relays, posting a 100-yard back time of 54.75 and a 100-yard fly time of 49.23 to open his season.
Pitt women's soccer (3-5-3, 0-1-2) will play next at Florida State Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla.
Up next for Pitt swimming and diving is the FIU TYR Fall Classic Presented by Omega Friday and Saturday in Miami, Fla.
