Swimming, Wrestling Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Rachel Brown of women's swimming and Demetrius Thomas of wrestling were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Brown, a senior, led a dominant performance by the Panthers in Saturday's Backyard Brawl triumph over rival West Virginia at Trees Pool, winning all three of her individual freestyle events. The High Point, N.C., native took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (22.96), 100-yard freestyle (50.51) and 200-yard freestyle (1:48.52) to earn maximum points for her team and ensure that the Pitt women extended their winning streak over the Mountaineers to seven consecutive dual meets. Brown also led off the victorious Pitt 400-yard freestyle relay, which added more points in the Panthers' 197.5-102.5 win in the annual matchup between the two teams. For her Backyard Brawl performance, Brown was honored on Monday as the ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the first time in her career.
The 20th-ranked Pitt wrestling team improved to 6-0 on the year after a road win at Oklahoma Sunday. The Panthers trailed 17-16 entering the final bout, and Thomas stepped up to the challenge at heavyweight. Pitt just needed a win to secure the team victory, but the junior downed Jake Boyd in a 13-2 major decision. Thomas, who ranks 13th in his weight class, improved to 18-2 after lifting the Panthers to victory in the final bout for the second time this year.
Up next, the Pitt swimming and diving teams will travel to Granville, Ohio, for a dual meet at Denison Friday, Jan. 18.
Pitt wrestling resumes action Saturday at No. 23 North Dakota State before making the short trip to South Dakota State Sunday.
