Shaffer, Vera Break School Records
PITTSBURGH – Madelyn Shaffer of women's swimming and Blaise Vera of men's swimming were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Shaffer, a junior, lowered her own school record in the 200-yard butterfly while helping the Panthers dominate the Western Pennsylvania Invitational Saturday at Trees Pool. Shaffer posted a winning time of 1:58.14 to bring down further her all-time Pitt best in the 200 fly that she has broken several times previously. Shaffer also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.33 and competed on Pitt's victorious 200-yard medley relay team, lifting the Panthers to five team victories during Saturday's in-state meet.
Vera, a sophomore, won his two individual events, broke a school record and helped set a relay school record as the Panthers dominated the Western Pennsylvania Invitational at Trees Pool Saturday. After setting the Pitt record in the 50-yard freestyle at the Ohio State Invitational, Vera lowered that mark twice on Saturday. In his first individual event, Vera won the 50 free with a new Pitt record time of 19.62 seconds. He then reset the school record in the event in leading off the 200-yard freestyle relay in 19.55, helping Pitt win that event to finish the meet with a school-record relay time of 1:19.52. Vera also won the 100-yard butterfly at the meet in 47.03 seconds—just off the Pitt record in that event. Perhaps more impressive than any of those feats, Vera also swam a sub-19-second split to anchor Pitt's victorious 200-yard medley relay team, covering the last 50 yards in 18.94 seconds.
Up next, the Pitt swimming and diving teams will complete their regular season schedules at Ohio State Friday at 4 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
