
Pitt Gymnastics Earns Program’s Highest Season-Opening Team Score

Panthers Compete in Front of Program’s Largest Home-Opening Crowd
PITTSBURGH – Two Panthers earned individual titles as the Pitt gymnastics team posted its highest season-opening team score in program history Saturday in a quad meet at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pitt (2-1, 0-0 EAGL) recorded a 194.750 team score, besting a record set at the 2018 season opener (194.125). The Panthers were edged by No. 22 West Virginia (4-2, 0-1 Big 12), who claimed the team title with a score of 195.500. Pitt topped Utah State (194.600) and Eastern Michigan (192.700) to place second.
The Panthers competed in front of the largest season-opening crowd in program history, with 1,249 fans in attendance.
Freshman Olivia Miller made a statement in her first collegiate meet, winning the all-around competition with a score of 39.050. She posted scores of 9.800 on vault and bars, 9.700 on beam and 9.750 on floor.
In her first competition since 2017, senior Brittany West claimed the earned the balance beam title with a score of 9.800.
VAULT
Sophomore Haley Brechwald was Pitt's top performer on vault, placing third and tying a career-best score of 9.850. Junior Alecia Petrikis followed at 9.825, and Miller rounded out the Panthers' top three with a 9.800. As a team, Pitt posted a score of 48.950.
BARS
Miller and senior Lucy Brett led the Panthers on bars, each posting 9.800 to place second overall. In her first showing on bars, sophomore Sophie Bochenek earned a score of 9.725. As a team, Pitt posted a score of 48.350.
BEAM
The Panthers had the highest beam team score of the day at 48.875. With West claiming the event victory at 9.800, Brett followed up with a 9.725 to place third. Miller came in third at 9.700.
FLOOR
Senior Charli Spivey had a career day with a score of 9.850 to lead the Panthers. Petrikis was next with a 9.800, while Miller and Bochenek rounded out Pitt's top three with 9.750 apiece. Pitt closed the meet with a score of 48.875 in the floor exercise.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will make their first road trip of the season, visiting New Hampshire for a quad meet against the Wildcats, Temple and Bridgeport, Friday, Jan. 18, in Durham, N.H.
