
Five Pitt Women Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

Fosam, Hayes, Middleton, Peters, Salvo Claim Individual Awards
NEW ORLEANS – Five student-athletes from the University of Pittsburgh earned All-Academic honors for the 2017-18 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), announced Thursday.
"It's great to see that our track and field student-athletes are continually meeting the highest standards that we set for them," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "Being student-athletes at a world class institution like Pitt and achieving academically at a level that is being recognized nationally by the USTFCCCA while also giving great effort and excelling in their sport is phenomenal. We look for special student-athletes like this, those that have their priorities straight and are laser-focused on being the best in every aspect, those that understand that this is not just about track and field but about life. They are willing to make sacrifices and look to take advantage of all of the opportunities that are here at the University of Pittsburgh that will make them successful in life long after their athletic careers are over. I'm very proud of all of our honorees, our individual recipients as well as our entire women's team as a whole, congratulations."
Thrower Andin Fosam, distance runner Kelly Hayes, jumper Taylor Middleton and distance runners Rebecca Peters and Miranda Salvo each garnered the awards. Fosam and Middleton were honored for both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, while Hayes, Peters and Salvo earned the accolades for the outdoor season.
Additionally, the Panthers earned All-Academic Team honors on the women's side for posting a grade point average of 3.24 for the academic year.
Fosam earned points for Pitt by placing seventh in hammer throw (59.63m) at the ACC Outdoor Championships. She followed up that performance with a 15th-place finish in the event at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, just short of a return trip to the Championships, landing at 60.04m. Her best mark came at the Virginia Challenge, where she placed fourth at 61.11m. She earned five top-10 finishes on the season. A spring 2018 graduate with dual degrees in biological sciences and history and philosophy of science, Fosam was named to the 2018 All-ACC Women's Indoor Academic Team and is also a recipient of a 2018 ACC Postgraduate Scholarship award recognizing her efforts in sport and in her academic pursuits. Fosam was also named a Pitt Athletics Scholar for 2017.
Hayes completed her Pitt track and field career by representing the Panthers at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the 5000m. She broke her own school record and earned All-ACC second team honors in the 3000m steeplechase at the ACC Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place finish at 10:18.64, while also competing in the 5000m. Hayes owns a 3.27 GPA in natural sciences.
Middleton represented Pitt at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in long jump and triple jump and earned All-ACC second team honors in triple jump at the ACC Outdoor Championships with a personal best mark of 12.75m, placing fifth. The rising junior marketing major earned a spot on the 2017-18 All-ACC Indoor Track & Field Academic Team, as she holds a 3.67 GPA.
Peters competed in the 5000m the ACC Outdoor Championships and at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. She placing 15th in the event at the ACC Championships with a time of 16:43.25. The Irwin, Pa., native posted a personal best time of 4:35.47 in the 1500m at the Campbell/Wright Open. Earlier in the season, she earned a PR of 16:31.55 in the 5000m at the Virginia Challenge. The senior graduated from Pitt in the spring with degrees in English writing and political science.
Salvo qualified to compete at the ACC Outdoor Championships in the 800m and 1500m, and advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the 1500m. At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Salvo set a school record in the outdoor mile with a time of 4:51.89. The Palmyra, Pa., native garnered All-ACC Academic honors this year for cross country and indoor track and field. A rising senior, Salvo holds a 3.59 GPA as a neuroscience major.
