Junior Sets Pitt Mile Record, Redshirt Senior Leads Baseball to Momentous Series Win
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Miranda Salvo and Frank Maldonado were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Salvo, a junior, set a Pitt record in the outdoor mile at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in Hayward, Calif., Saturday. Her time of 4:51.89 broke a 20-year-old mark set by Anna-Rebekka Kohler in 1998 (5:03.00). The Palmyra, Pa., native led a trio of Panthers who ran under the old school standard, including seniors Amy Kelly (4:57.16) and Rebecca Peters (5:02.94). Salvo also competed in the 1500m at the Stanford Invitational Friday, placing fourth in her outdoor season debut for the event at 4:26.76.
Maldonado, a redshirt senior outfielder, led Pitt baseball to a 2-1 series victory over Virginia, marking the Panthers' first series win over the Cavaliers in program history. The Short Hills, N.J., native hit an astounding .556 against a solid Virginia pitching staff, tallying nine RBI with a homer and two walks. Maldonado tallied at least one hit in each outing, including back-to-back multi-hit games as Pitt earned Saturday and Sunday victories to capture the series. The centerfielder also added a career-high eight putouts in the finale, as he retired four straight in the third – fourth innings to help Pitt solidify the series win. On the season, Maldonado brought his average over the .300 mark, as he is now hitting at a .313 clip, second highest on the squad. He has brought home 21 runners, second best on the team, tallying five doubles and one homer with a .410 slugging percentage and a .383 on base mark.
Up next for Pitt track and field are the Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary April 5-7 at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va. The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack.org.
Maldonado and the Panthers' baseball team will take part in a home-and-home series with Youngstown State, traveling to Youngstown, Ohio, Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to face the Penguins Wednesday at 3 p.m. Pitt will resume ACC play Friday, traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for a three-game tilt with Boston College.
