PITTSBURGH—Pitt football head coach Pat Narduzzi announced Tuesday that past Panthers head coaches Johnny Majors and Walt Harris will serve as honorary coaches for Saturday's Annual Pitt Blue-Gold Spring Game presented by PNC at Heinz Field.
"We have two honorary head coaches also that are coming back to town," current Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said after Tuesday's practice. "Walt Harris will be here; he'll be a head coach for one of the teams. And Johnny Majors is coming back. So he'll be back for the spring game. He's excited; he wants to know when he gets his meetings with the offense. He wants to put some plays in. He's ready to go. We're excited to have those two legends back here at Pitt for the spring game."
Majors, who coached the Panthers from 1973-76 and again from 1993-96, is remembered as the man who led Pitt to the 1976 national title as Tony Dorsett ran away with the Heisman Trophy. He finished his storied coaching career (which included tenures at Tennessee and Iowa State) with 185 victories and 16 bowl invitations. A College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Majors regularly returns to Pittsburgh for Panthers' games at Heinz Field.
Harris spent eight seasons patrolling the Pitt sidelines from 1997-2004. He was responsible for revitalizing Pitt football, leading the program to six bowl berths and memorable triumphs over Miami, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and Penn State. His final Pitt team in 2004 earned a Big East title and BCS berth in the Fiesta Bowl.
The 2018 Pitt Spring Game will be played in a true game format after the Panthers are drafted by the Blue and Gold teams on Wednesday.
Admission for Saturday's contest is FREE for all fans. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
