Panthers Fall to No. 6 Wolfpack

Bruce, Bentley and Forys Earn Individual Victories in Pitt’s Loss to NC State

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 6 NC State in ACC action, 23-9, Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 2-9 overall and 0-3 against ACC foes, while the Wolfpack improve to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in conference competition.
Redshirt junior Zach Bruce (197), junior LJ Bentley (125) and senior Dom Forys (133) were Pitt's lone wins on the day.
NC State ripped off five consecutive wins to start the night, taking a commanding 17-0 lead as the dual got started at 149 pounds.
The Panthers got on the board at 197 pounds after Bruce picked up a 5-0 decision over Tyler Johnson. Bruce earned all five points in the third period after Johnson was hit with stalling twice, Bruce then added a reversal and tacked on one more point with riding time.
The Wolfpack led 17-3 entering the heavyweight bout as redshirt senior Ryan Solomon dropped a 5-3 to Michael Boykin.
Pitt responded at 125 pounds as Bentley picked up a 3-1 victory over Tommy Cox. Bentley entered the third period with a 3-1 lead, however Cox tied the match after a reversal. Bentley escaped to take the lead and secure the win to bring the team score to 20-6 in favor of the Wolfpack.
The Panthers captured its third and final win of the dual at 133 pounds as Forys won in a 7-5 decision over No. 13 Tariq Wilson. Forys fell behind 4-3 after the first period but quickly took the lead in the second after an escape off bottom and a takedown. Entering the third, Forys led 6-4 but let Wilson escape to bring the score to 6-5, however it wouldn't be enough as Forys added another point with riding time en route to the decision.
The Wolfpack finished off their day with a win at 141 pounds, as Jamel Morris won in a 12-8 decision over No. 19 redshirt senior Nick Zanetta, giving NC State the 23-9 victory over the Panthers.
Pitt will be back in action Friday, Feb. 9 when its hosts South Dakota State at 7 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
